Axial Fans VS. Centrifugal Fans – What’s the Difference?
December 21 , 2021Applications:
Axial cooling fan, which can effectively move a large volumes of air, is usually used to cool small and large spaces. They can cool electronic equipment or computer rooms. They can be used for field cooling of HVAC operations, air conditioning condensers, heat exchange units or industrial systems. Axial flow fan can also be used as exhaust fan.
Centrifugal cooling fans, considering the reliability and durability of their design, can operate well in many applications, which operate in harsh and dirty environments with particles, hot air and gas. Because they can be used with ductwork or piping, they work well in air conditioning or drying systems, even at a smaller system level. For electronic products, centrifugal fans often appear in small devices such as laptops, because how the air is discharged from the air inlet at a 90 degree angle, resulting in higher directivity.
Whether axial fan or centrifugal fan is used as cooling solution depends on many factors, depending on the advantages and disadvantages of each fan design and the cooling needs of customers.
The following are the main features of axial fans and centrifugal fans:
Axial Fans |
Centrifugal Fans |
High Volume/Low Pressure |
High Pressure/Low Volume |
Airflow parallel to axis |
Airflow perpendicular to axis |
Higher operating speed than centrifugal |
Lower operating speed than axial |
Compact designs |
Better for specific directed cooling |
Lower power usage than centrifugal |
Typically uses more power than axial |
Less audible noise than centrifugal |
More audible noise than axial |
Typically, less expensive than centrifugal |
Durable and resistant to harsh environments |
Convective cooling of equipment that generates unnecessary heat can be effectively controlled by axial fans or centrifugal fans. Through years of use and continuous optimization and improvement, the modern design of these two fans adopts stronger, lighter and more cost-effective materials than the earlier design. DC axial fans and DC centrifugal blowers have a variety of frame sizes, airflow levels and bearing systems, which can meet the needs of different customers and provide a wide range of cooling and ventilation solutions for equipment.
